Rethinking Goal Setting: Beyond Linear Paths and Outdated Methods

Hey there, goal smasher! Ever felt like the classic goal-setting advice just... doesn’t quite fit your life’s messy, twisty journey? Yeah, me too. So, grab a cup of coffee, and let’s chat about flipping the script on goal setting.

The Old School of Thought

Remember being told to make your goals SMART? Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. It sounds so neat and tidy. And then there's the whole "set a deadline" spiel. But here’s the kicker: life isn’t a straight line. It’s more like a meandering river with unexpected rapids and serene stretches. So, why are we trying to navigate it with a linear map?

The Myth of the Straight Path

This idea that we can chart a direct route to our dreams assumes we know exactly where we’re going and how to get there. But honestly, when have the big, life-changing goals ever been that straightforward? If you’re venturing into unknown territory—whether it’s starting a business, changing careers, or any personal transformation—how are you supposed to know the exact time it'll take?

A Brainy Side-Note

Thanks to the wonders of modern neuroscience (hello, fMRI scans!), we now understand the human brain in ways we never did before. What we’ve learned is that our brains, our behaviors, and how we pursue goals are incredibly complex. So, sticking to goal-setting methods from decades ago feels a bit like trying to stream the latest series on an old, clunky computer. Sure, it might work, but you’re missing out on so much more efficiency and clarity.

Time to Ditch the Old Playbook

Real talk: The traditional ways of setting goals don’t always allow for the reality that sometimes we need to backtrack, reroute, or even pause to take in the view. Life throws curveballs, and our goals need to be flexible enough to catch them or dodge when necessary.

Embracing the Journey

What if we started looking at goal setting as more of an adventure and less of a to-do list? Imagine setting intentions that give us room to explore, make mistakes, and grow. It’s about celebrating the small wins and learning from the detours. Because sometimes, those unexpected paths lead us to places far more amazing than we could’ve planned for. And yes, I am plugging my book Goal Smasher, but I believe in it, AND you so much, and if I put the two together... boom!

Listen, it is often free with promotions on Amazon, so hit me up, and I will make sure you get a copy. The world needs your light and a Goal Smasher is great for getting unstuck. And now you can listen on Audible.

What Do You Think?

I’m dying to know—have you felt boxed in by traditional goal-setting advice? How do you deal with the unpredictability and excitement of chasing after something big? Drop your thoughts below. Let’s redefine what it means to set and achieve goals in a way that truly reflects the beautifully complex journey of life. Here’s to the winding road ahead, filled with surprises and learning at every turn!
